The Surgical Procedure
Cataract surgery is one of the safest surgical procedures performed today. Surgeons have performed cataract surgery for over 35 years, but recent technological and surgical advances have made it a more gentle and reliable process than ever before. Cataract surgery can be completed on an outpatient basis.
Before cataract surgery the eye is anesthetized. The surgeon then makes a tiny incision at the edge of the cornea. The front portion of the lens is opened, and the cataract is removed. An intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted in place of the patient’s natural lens.
YAG Laser Correction
This procedure is used to clear cloudy vision due to capsule haze. Capsule haze occurs after a patient has had cataract surgery and the cells begin to collect behind the new lens causing a foggy or clouded vision. The doctor clears the capsule haze by applying laser treatment to the posterior capsule and clearing away the clouded cells. Cells then continue to collect around the lens, but never again cover the visual pathway.
